The stock PCV (Positive Crank-case Ventilation) system does a great job of catching the pressurised oil vapour, straining it and returning it to the sump, while allowing the pressure in the sump to be alleviated by using the lower pressure source between the turbo and air-filter.

However when the boost is turned up, or a larger higher-boosting turbo is fitted, the amount of blow-by that makes its way past the rings can overwhelm the stock PCV system. 

The extent of this issue depends on the age/mileage of the motor, boost level, torque and fuel type, amongst other factors. 

Once the amount of PCV gas flow exceeds what the stock PCV is capable of handling, oil collects inside the PCV as it is not able to drain back to sump. With high-G braking and extended periods of boost, this collected oil then overflows into the intake manifold port where it is burnt by the motor producing a cloud of smoke. The characteristic of the EA888 Gen 3 motor is called oil surge and can lead to oil starvation.

Our catch can solution replaces the stock PCV unit, and blocks off the intake manifold drain port, instead routing the gas through a catch can, making use of the stock location low-pressure source (before the turbo).
