The owner of this 8P A3 2.0T approached us for a custom ECU tune at K04-064 Stage 1 level, and we got to work!

Engine: 2.0 4-Cylinder TFSI (Turbo charged, direct injection) - EA113 (BZC S3 Motor Swap)

Transmission: 6-Speed Manual

ECU: Bosch MED9.1

This vehicle still has the stock intake, stock HPFP and stock LPFP. This means that we will tune it at STG1/K04 level as we would a mostly stock Audi S3 8P.


We performed the pre-tuning datalogs, and could immediately tell that something wasn't 100% with the current 'tuned' map on the car. It was only achieving around 0.7/0/8 bar, which is well below where it should be. Hardware wise, everything else seemed healthy and so we got to work.

We removed the ECU, to perform a full backup of it, as is standard protocol on these in case of a bad flash, we can always restore the complete contents of the ECU.

We then connected it in bench mode using our MMS FLEX flashing tools for the backup and flashing.


With the ECU flashed, we got back to logging and with the boost level now where it should be, we immediately ran into spark blowout misfire. This was quickly diagnosed as the coil packs not keeping up, as the misfire occured only with the elevated boost level and only under peak cylinder pressure. The sound and misfire pattern was also specific to coilpack misfire and not sparkplug misfire.


With a new set of coilpacks, we could get back to work revising and fine-tuning the file for the hardware. The LPFP was aged and the low pressure was dropping off in the higher rpm range. However as we were tuning it at Stage 1 level only, it could still support the boost level we run for Stage 1 hardware.


The result:

Before: 178 kW / 314 NM (At reduced boost level)

After: 232 kW / 471 Nm


This is the difference between an inappropriate tune resulting in a lower than normal boost level, vs a hardware specific custom tune.
